Taylor Smith earns Southern Athletic Association Basketball Player of the Week

Junior guard Taylor Smith of the Oglethorpe University Women's Basketball team was named the Southern Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Feb. 3 by the league's office. It marks the first such award of her Oglethorpe career and the Stormy Petrels' second SAA weekly award of the season. A Politics major, Smith is from Plantation, FL and a graduate of American Heritage School. Smith led the Petrels to a pair of victories over Rhodes College and Hendrix College on Friday and Sunday, helping her team clinch the No. 1 seed in the SAA Tournament and at least a share of the SAA regular season title. Smith averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds per game, also adding three assists and four steals per contest. In Sunday's title-clinching 78-71 win at Rhodes, she scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, adding four assists and six steals. For the season, Smith is second on the SAA leaderboard in offensive rebounding, coming up with 3.3 per game to put her behind her own teammate, Savannah LeGate. She's also second in field goal attempts and third in field goal makes, going 128-for-294 so far and accruing a 43.5 percent shooting mark. This puts her at fifth in the league in that category. She is also fourth in total rebounds (165) and fifth in free throw attempts (93).

Mateo Villa receives individual U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association all-academic honors

Senior Mateo Villa of the Oglethorpe University men's cross country team earned individual all-academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) this week. This honor marked the first such award of Villa's career. A physics/engineering major, Villa is from Saint Johns, FL and is a graduate of Creekside High School. Villa garnered his first career All-Region honor during the fall, finishing 31st at the regional meet with a time of 26 minutes, 5.1 seconds on the 8-kilometer course in Memphis. It marked the program's second consecutive All-Region honor and served as an excellent cap to Villa's outstanding cross country career, which featured a pair of All-SAA honors in 2017 and 2018. Villa served as one of 309 individuals to earn USTFCCCA all-academic honors, for which runners had to accrue a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 and finish in the top 25 percent of their respective regional championship meet. Villa's team was also named among the the all-academic squads in Division III.

The election results for Oglethorpe University's student organization Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) 2020 leadership have been announced. 70 Oglethorpe Students Volunteer in Atlanta on MLK Day of Service

To honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Oglethorpe University students and alumni participated in service trips around Atlanta on Monday, January 20 for the university's annual MLK Day of Service. More than 70 students spent their day off from classes volunteering with the following metro Atlanta nonprofits: - Crossroads Hospice, where they made Valentine's Day cards for patients; - Open Hand Atlanta, sorting and boxing food for food insecure Atlanta-area residents; - Books for Africa, packing books for shipment to under-resourced communities in Africa; and - Grant Park Conservancy, participating in outdoor revitalization To recruit volunteers, Oglethorpe's Atlanta Laboratory for Learning (A_LAB) partnered with the Office of Alumni Relations, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Epsilon Iota Psi, Tri Sigma Sorority, and Black Student Caucus. Josh Cammon earns OU Male Athlete of the Week

Junior Josh Cammon of the Oglethorpe University men's basketball team has been named the OU Male Athlete of the Week. A Business Administration major, Cammon is from Covington, GA and a graduate of Tucker High School. Cammon was outstanding in a pair of wins for the Stormy Petrels, earning SAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors for his efforts. He averaged 21 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and two blocks per contest in victories over Millsaps College and Birmingham-Southern College at Dorough Field House, all while shooting 53.3 percent from the field. He scored 32 points on 14-of-26 from the floor and grabbed 18 rebounds in Friday's 114-107 triple-overtime victory over the Majors, then 10 points on 5-of-6 from the free-throw line and eight boards two days later against Birmingham-Southern. He made five steals on Friday against Millsaps, then went for three steals and three blocks on Sunday against the Panthers. The Petrel forward finds himself second in the SAA with four double-doubles and 129 rebounds. He's also fourth in the league with 1.9 steals per game and 34 total steals.

Taylor Smith earns the Oglethorpe Female Athlete of the Week

Junior Taylor Smith of the Oglethorpe University women's basketball team has been named the Oglethorpe Female Athlete of the Week. A Politics major, Smith is from Plantation, FL and a graduate of American Heritage High School. Smith scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Sunday's 75-72 win over Birmingham-Southern College. She also scored 7 points and grabbed eight rebounds in Friday's win over Millsaps College.

Dimetri Chambers earns OU Male Athlete of the Week

Junior guard Dimetri Chambers of the Oglethorpe University men's basketball team has been named the OU Male Athlete of the Week (Jan. 6-12). A Business Administration major, Chambers is a graduate of Herschel Jenkins High School (Savannah, GA). Chambers helped lead the Stormy Petrels to a 1-1 record over the course of the weekend. He scored 29 points on 10-of-14 from the field, 5-of-8 from 3-point range, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Friday's 77-75 win at Sewanee: The University of the South. He then came back with 22 points on 5-of-6 from the line on Sunday's 81-63 defeat at Centre College. He's currently fourth in the country in total steals (40) and 21st in steals per game (2.67). He's second in the SAA in scoring (21.0 PPG) and first in steals per game. He and the Petrels will return home on Friday to take on Millsaps College at 8 p.m., then will host Birmingham-Southern College on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Amy Vazquez earns OU Female Athlete of the Week

Freshman Amy Vazquez of the Oglethorpe University women's basketball team has been named the OU Female Athlete of the Week (Jan.6-12). A Business Administration major, Vazquez is a graduate of Lake Mary High School in Florida. Vazquez enjoyed her best week of the season so far in leading the Stormy Petrels to wins on the road against Sewanee: The University of the South and Centre College. She scored 22 points on 8-of-11 overall and 6-of-9 from long distance against Sewanee, also securing 10 rebounds to record her first career double-double. She also passed out three assists in the contest. Then, she followed up with 13 points on 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in Sunday's win over Centre. She and the rest of the Petrels host Millsaps College on Friday at 6 p.m., then welcome in Birmingham-Southern College on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Nashville's Savannah LeGate earns SAA Player of the Week honors at Oglethorpe University

The Southern Athletic Association named Oglethorpe junior center Savannah LeGate as the SAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week (Dec. 15-21). LeGate led the Stormy Petrels to a pair of victories over LeTourneau University and Belhaven University on December 16 and 17 in the TownePlace Suites by Marriott Classic at Oglethorpe's Dorough Field House. LeGate averaged 20 points, 14 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in the two wins. She scored 24 points and grabbed 13 boards in the Stormy Petrels' 89-85 overtime victory over LeTourneau, then came back a day later with 16 points and 15 rebounds in an 81-76 win over Belhaven. The Petrel center leads the conference in offensive rebounding with 4.3 per game, and also places second in the league with 89 total rebounds. She's recorded four double-doubles on the year, placing her second in that category.

Oglethorpe University scholars awarded undergraduate research funding

Thirteen Oglethorpe University students have received undergraduate research awards from Oglethorpe's Student Research Development Fund, distributed annually. The recipients are majoring in a range of disciplines, including biology, biopsychology, politics, psychology, sociology, and English. Funding applications were evaluated by a committee comprised of Oglethorpe faculty: Dr. Lea Alford, Eli Arnold, Dr. Nick Bujak, Dr. Beth Concepcion, Alyssa Kowis, Dr. Glenn Sharfman, Dr. Karen Schmeichel, and Dr. Justin Wise. Funding recipients are: Syeda Bano '20, Politics and Sociology major - Bano will present her research on identity development and identity salience of Southeast Asian college students in the southeastern United States at the Annual Southern Sociological Society Conference in Florida in April 2020. Yasmin Tehrani '20, International Studies and English major - Tehrani will present her paper "Mrs. Dalloway and the Membrane Between Selves" at the International Sigma Tau Delta Conference in Las Vegas. Ariana Jimenez '20, Biology major - Jimenez will attend the American Society of Cell Biology Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. to present their research on ciliary assembly using the genetic model organism Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a unicellular green algae with two cilia. Alex Prots '20, Biology major - Prots has conducted surveys with visitors of three different bays on the West (Kona) Coast of Hawaii, and will take her findings to the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Bozeman, Montana in March 2020. Lexi Covalsen '20, English and Comparative Literature major - In March 2020, Covalsen will return to the Sigma Tau Delta international conference in Las Vegas to present her essay "Defining Trauma in the Graphic Novel." Fernanda Rodrigues '20, English and Comparative Literature major - In March 2020, Rodrigues will attend the Sigma Tau Delta international conference in Las Vegas to present her critical essay "The Satirical Happiness in 'Mad Men,'" which focuses on her analysis of how the television series uses satirical view of 1960s America in similar literary techniques present in Samuel Clemens' texts. Jaime Croft '20, Biopsychology major Andrew Aycock '20, Biopsychology major Croft and Aycock will present research at the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference on the possible predictors that could influence attitudes in college students toward cheating. The project looked at how cognitive ability, academic self-efficacy, sense of belonging in school, and locus of control could influence attitudes towards academic dishonesty. Emily Schultz '20, English and Psychology major Mikayla Ries '21, Psychology major At the 2020 Southeastern Psychological Association conference, Ries and Schultz will present their study investigating how signature location might influence participants' honest self-reports of their own personality. Jalisa Kassam '20, Biopsychology major - Kassam tested factors in students influencing attitudes toward cheating and academic dishonesty. She will present her findings at the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference held in New Orleans in April 2020. Erin Raquel Battaglia '20, Psychology major - Battaglia will continue her research on the effect of severity and type of trauma on the social response to victims. The research suggests that participants responded more to the severity of the survivor's symptoms of distress post-trauma than to the severity of the trauma itself. Lane Sticher '20, Communication and Rhetoric Studies major - Sticher will present at the Sigma Tau Delta International Conference in Las Vegas in March 2020. There, she will present her research paper "Primetime and the Oppressed Mother," which looks at how primetime television represents women and how working moms are depicted on television.

Grodhaus nabs coaches' Scholar All-America honors

Senior midfielder Andrew Grodhaus of the Oglethorpe University men's soccer team took home Scholar All-America second-team honors from the United Soccer Coaches Wednesday, providing a capstone to his remarkable four-year career as a Stormy Petrel. It marked the first Scholar All-America award of his career and the third season in a row in which a member of the team earned the honor. Grodhaus is from Duluth, Ga. and a graduate of Northview High School. An accounting major, Grodhaus held a 3.66 cumulative GPA through the spring semester of 2019. All the while, he served as a stalwart at holding midfielder for all four of his seasons with the Petrels. In addition to nabbing first-team Scholar All-South Region honors on Monday, he took coaches' All-South Atlantic Region first-team honors in November. That marked his second career All-Region accolade and his first time making the first team. He also took home All-SAA honors in all four seasons, including All-SAA first team honors the last two. This season, he scored three goals and tallied three assists out of his defensive midfield spot, scoring the game-winning goal against Centre in the team's 3-1 win on Sept. 28. Grodhaus led the Petrels to their fifth straight SAA regular season title and their third straight conference final in 2019. He also took part in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship for the second time in his career, and the program's third time, when the Petrels earned an at-large bid to the tournament field in November. Oglethorpe compiled a 51-15-6 overall record during Grodhaus' 4 years with the program. The United Soccer Coaches honored 35 student-athletes as Division III men's Scholar All-America honorees Wednesday, dispersed over three teams. To be eligible for Scholar All-America consideration, a player must be at least a junior in athletic standing, accrue at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA over the course of his career, start more than 50 percent of his team's games during his career, and be an elite on-field player as supported by playing honors and/or contributions to the success of his team. The organization will formally acknowledge the accomplishments of all their Scholar All-Americans, across divisions, at their January convention in Baltimore.

Five Stormy Petrels named to SAA fall all-sportsmanship teams

The Southern Athletic Association released its fall all-sportsmanship teams on Dec. 11, recognizing student-athletes who displayed outstanding sportsmanship over the course of their seasons. The 2019 Oglethorpe University student-athletes to earn SAA fall all-sportsmanship designation are: Men's cross country - Bill Lester Women's cross country - Sarah Brummett Men's soccer - Andrew Grodhaus Women's soccer - Sara McDade Volleyball - Emilee Etter The SAA places a special emphasis on good sportsmanship, great character and fair play amongst all competitors. Nikki Reed named Oglethorpe University Female Athlete of the Week

Nikeria 'Nikki' Reed of the Oglethorpe women's basketball team has been named the OU Female Athlete of the Week (Dec. 1-7). A sophomore Business Administration major, Reed is from Tampa, Fla. and a graduate of Seffner Christian Academy. Reed scored 22 points on Dec. 3 in the team's 76-72 win over crosstown rival Emory, sinking all five of her free throw attempts down the stretch. She also recorded six rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Petrels' 66-36 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) win over Berry College on Dec. 7. For the week, she averaged 13.5 points, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. For the season, Reed currently sits fourth in the SAA in free throw percentage (78.1) and steals per game (2.6).

Oglethorpe's Joshua Cammon named OU Male Athlete of the Week

Joshua Cammon of the Oglethorpe men's basketball team has been named the OU Male Athlete of the Week (Dec. 1-7). A junior Business Administration major, Cammon is from Covington, Ga. and a graduate of Tucker High School. Cammon scored 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the Stormy Petrels' loss at Piedmont on Dec. 3, then added 9 points on 3-of-3 from beyond the arc in the team's SAA-opening loss to Berry on Dec. 7. He and the rest of the Petrels will next be in action Dec. 20 and 21 from West Palm Beach, Fla. They'll take on Goucher and either Geneva or Merchant Marine at the Palm Beach Classic.

Oglethorpe University's Andrew Grodhaus earns coaches' first-team Scholar All-Region recognition

The United Soccer Coaches named Oglethorpe senior midfielder Andrew Grodhaus to their NCAA Division III men's Scholar All-South Region first team Monday, as voted by coaches from around the region. It marked the first such award of Grodhaus' career and the fifth consecutive season in which a member of the Stormy Petrels earned the honor. The team earned eight individual Scholar All-Region honors in that 5-year span. A graduate of Northview High School in Johns Creek, GA, Grodhaus is an accounting major and held a 3.66 cumulative GPA through the spring semester of 2019. Four Oglethorpe University Men's Soccer Players Earn Coaches' All-Region Honors

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team put an impressive four players on the 2019 United Soccer Coaches Men's Division III All-South Atlantic Region Teams on Dec. 2, marking the most players that the Stormy Petrels have put on an All-Region squad since 2011. Senior midfielder Andrew Grodhaus and senior forward Ryan Marcano earned spots on the first team, while senior defender Christian Waegelin and senior midfielder Gabe Alvarez garnered spots on the second team. Grodhaus, and accounting major and graduate of Northview High School, has been a stalwart at holding midfielder all four seasons with the Petrels. This marked his second consecutive All-Region honor and his first career first-team accolade after earning second-team honors in 2018. He also took home All-SAA honors in all four seasons, including All-SAA first team honors for the last two seasons. This season, he scored three goals and tallied three assists out of his defensive midfield spot, scoring the game-winning goal against Centre College in the team's 3-1 win on September 28. Marcano, a business administration major and graduate of Greater Atlanta Christian School, took his second career first-team All-South Atlantic honor after first earning the award in 2017. In addition, he garnered the second All-SAA first team selection of his career this season. The Petrel offensive standout finished tied for first in the SAA in penalty-kick conversion rate, burying a perfect 3-for-3. He also finished third in goals per game (0.63), fourth in total goals (10), sixth in points per game (1.38), and seventh in total points (22). Waegelin, a physics/engineering major and graduate of Milton High School, capped an outstanding four-year career with the SAA Defensive Player of the Year award, and he garnered his first career All-Region honor. He also bagged his third career All-SAA honor and his second consecutive All-SAA first team nod. Waeglin served as an essential part of a defensive unit that finished third in the SAA over the course of the season with a 1.32 team goals-against average. That unit is also third in the conference with a .316 shutout percentage over the course of the campaign. The Petrel senior tallied a pair of goals and three assists on the year, as well. Alvarez, a business administration major and graduate of Bearden High School, garnered his first career All-Region honor this year after earning All-SAA second team honors in all four of his seasons as a Petrel. He finished second in the conference in assists per game (0.5) and total assists (8), fifth in shots per game (3.44), sixth in points per game (1.38), and seventh in total points (22). The Petrels won their fifth straight SAA regular season title in 2019 and advanced to the third NCAA tournament in program history. They finished the season 14-5 overall, advancing to the final of the SAA tournament for the third year in a row. Their season ended with a first-round loss to Gettysburg on November 16 in Lexington, Virginia. The All-Region teams are voted on by coaches from across Division III's South Atlantic region. All four honorees are automatically nominated for All-America consideration.

Two Oglethorpe University women's soccer players earn All-SAA honorable mention

The Southern Athletic Association women's soccer coaches voted junior goalkeeper Lindsey Bolas and freshman midfielder Kieran Burkey to the All-SAA honorable mention list, released on Nov. 11 by the league office. It marked the second career All-SAA honor for Bolas, the other an honorable mention nod in 2017. Bolas, a biology major and graduate of Troy High School in Troy, Michigan, enjoyed another outstanding season for the Stormy Petrels, placing herself among the best goalkeepers in the conference. She finished third in the league in saves per game with 4.6, while also coming in third with 69 total saves. She also tallied a 1.77 goals-against average and a .742 save percentage. Burkey, a gradute of Lincoln Southeast High School in Lincoln, Nebraska, enjoyed an excellent debut campaign for the Petrels. She recorded four goals and three assists in 15 games and bagged game-winners in the team's 1-0 season-opening win over Benedictine (Illinois) Aug. 30 and their 3-2 win at Wesleyan Sept. 22. The Petrels finished 9-8 on the season, compiling their best record since 2000 when they finished 10-7-2.

Three Oglethorpe University volleyball players earn All-SAA honorable mention

Three Oglethorpe volleyball players earned All-SAA (Southern Athletic Association) honorable mention on Dec. 11 as voted by the league's coaches. Junior middle blocker Ta'Korya Green, sophomore outside hitter/setter Emma Williams and freshman outside hitter Jackie Schner all garnered the award. It served as the first career All-SAA award for all three Stormy Petrels. Green had an excellent year for the Petrels on the front line. She finished fourth in the SAA with 17 solo blocks, and eighth in the league with a .244 hitting percentage and 3.3 points per set. She recorded 230 kills and 61 total blocks. Williams finished eighth in the SAA with 4.78 assists per set. She also recorded 282 total assists and 48 kills. Schner made her Petrel debut in 2019 and earned All-SAA honors for her efforts. She tallied 210 kills and 230 digs, putting her in the league's top 20 in both categories. The Petrels finished 6-20 on the season overall.

Oglethorpe University men's cross country earns numerous postseason awards, highlighted by Villa's All-Region honor

The Oglethorpe men's cross country team saw several athletes earn postseason honors this month, both for performances in the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional and the Southern Athletic Association Cross Country Championships. Senior Mateo Villa garnered South/Southeast All-Region honors, while senior Rodrigo Meade, sophomores Aidan Goldston and Thomas Ridley, and junior Bill Lester all took home All-SAA honors. Villa garnered his first career All-Region honor, finishing 31st at the regional meet on Nov. 16 in Memphis, Tennessee, with a time of 26 minutes, 5.1 seconds on the 8-kilometer course. It marked the program's second consecutive All-Region honor and served as an excellent cap to Villa's outstanding cross country career, which featured a pair of All-SAA honors in 2017 and 2018. The top 35 finishers at each of the eight Division III regional sites automatically earned All-Region honors. Meade capped his career with his first All-SAA first-team honor at the conference meet in Mount Berry on Nov. 2, finishing the 8-kilometer race in 26:07.4 to come in fourth. That finish marked the best by a Stormy Petrel in the history of the SAA Championships. It also served as Meade's first career All-SAA cross country honor. Goldston captured All-SAA second team honors at the conference meet, finishing the race in 26:28.2 and placing 10th. It served as his first career All-SAA honor. A pair of Petrels took All-SAA honorable mention, with Ridley and Lester grabbing the honors. Ridley finished 13th at the conference meet with a time of 26:34.0, marking his first career all-conference selection. Lester garnered his third straight All-SAA award by finishing 15th in 26:38.0. All-SAA teams are determined by order of finish at the SAA Championships. Runners finishing first through fifth earn first-team honors, sixth through 10th second-team, and 11th through 15th honorable mention. The top finisher at the meet is named the SAA Runner of the Year and the freshman with the best finish the SAA Newcomer of the Year.

Oglethorpe University's Ryan Marcano earns second career Coaches' All-America Honor

Senior forward Ryan Marcano of the Oglethorpe University men's soccer team earned the second all-America honor of his career on Dec. 5 from the United Soccer Coaches. A Business Administration major, Marcano is a graduate of Greater Atlanta Christian Schools. The Stormy Petrel striker garnered a spot on the organization's NCAA Division III men's all-America second team, released on Dec. 5 in conjunction with the NCAA banquet prior to the men's and women's national semifinals in Greensboro, North Carolina. Marcano took home all-America third-team honors at the conclusion of the 2017 season and his 2019 award means that a member of the Petrels has earned all-America honors in each of the last three seasons. He finished the season tied for third in the SAA in goals per game with 0.63, while also tying for fourth in the league with 10 total goals scored. He tied for sixth in the conference in points per game with 1.38 and seventh in total points with 22. His goals per game mark placed him in the top 10 in the South Atlantic region, while his points per game and total goals marks put him in the top 20. The Petrels attacker finished all three of his penalty kick opportunities on the season, as well. As well as becoming the program's second-ever two-time all-American, the Atlanta native won All-South Atlantic Region first-team honors from the United Soccer Coaches on Monday for the second time in his career. The conference's coaches also tabbed him for the All-SAA first team in November, marking his second career appearance on that list. In addition, Marcano earned the Southern Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week award twice during the 2019 campaign, scoring a goal each in the team's victories over No. 20 Claremont-M-S and Pomona-Pitzer over Labor Day weekend and tallying both goals in their 2-1 win at Sewanee University on October 5. He helped the Petrel attack to second place in the nation in scoring offense with 3.58 goals per game, fifth in points per game with 9.58, sixth in total goals with 68, and eighth in total points with 182. Marcano led the team to its fifth straight SAA regular season title and its third straight conference final. He also took part in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship for the second time in his career, and the program's third time, when the Petrels earned an at-large bid to the tournament field in November. Marcano took part in the program's third-ever conference tournament championship in 2017. The Petrels went 31-7-2 during Marcano's two years on the team. The United Soccer Coaches honored 47 student-athletes as Division III men's all-Americans on Dec. 5, dispersed over three teams. The organization will formally acknowledge the accomplishments of all their all-Americans, across divisions, at their January convention in Baltimore.

Carlos Sone earns Oglethorpe University Male Athlete of the Week

Sophomore Carlos Sone of the Oglethorpe men's basketball team was named the Oglethorpe Male Athlete of the Week (Nov. 24-30). A Biopsychology major, Sone is a graduate of Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School. Sone averaged 14.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game at the Maryville Thanksgiving Classic, helping his team to an 83-81 overtime victory over Maryville College and playing well in an 89-87 loss to Johnson University. Overall, he went 9-of-18 from the field and 6-of-13 from 3-point range over the two games, while also making a perfect 4 of 4 free throw attempts. He averaged 3.5 assists per game, 3.0 steals per game, and only 1.0 turnover per game. He scored 13 points, grabbed 11 boards, and recorded three assists and three steals in the win over Maryville College.

Taylor Smith earns Oglethorpe University Female Athlete of the Week honor

Junior Taylor Smith of the Oglethorpe University women's basketball team was named the Oglethorpe Female Athlete of the Week (Nov. 24-30). A Politics major, Smith is a graduate of American Heritage High School. Smith scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Stormy Petrels' 80-58 win over Covenant College on Tuesday, Nov. 26. She went 11-for-15 from the field and made three steals. Smith is currently second in the SAA in offensive rebounds with 23, and is fifth in field-goal percentage (52.5) and steals (16).

Sydni Donovan named Oglethorpe University Female Athlete of the Week

Sydni Donovan of the Oglethorpe women's basketball team has been named the OU Female Athlete of the Week. A Business Administration major, Donovan is a graduate of Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach. Donovan scored 19 points and accrued five blocks in the Stormy Petrels' 73-53 win over Randolph-Macon College on Saturday at the Comfort Suites Classic in Emory, Virginia. She went 7-for-9 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line over the course of the game, which boosted Oglethorpe's record to 3-1 on the season. Donovan also went 2-for-3 from the field in Friday's loss to Emory and Henry College at the same event. She and the rest of the team get set to travel to Danville, Kentucky on Friday and Saturday for the Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic. They'll go against Maryville College (Tennessee) on Friday at 5 p.m. and Otterbein University on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Will Koch named the Oglethorpe University Male Athlete of the Week

Junior Will Koch of the Oglethorpe University men's basketball team has been named the OU Male Athlete of the Week. A Business Administration major, Koch is a graduate of Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach. Koch led the way for the Stormy Petrels in their 71-57 victory over Warren Wilson College in the Vikings Tipoff Tournament in Mount Berry, scoring 15 points while grabbing an impressive 21 rebounds. He also passed out five assists in the process. Koch also scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds in the team's contest with Bob Jones University the previous evening. He and the rest of the Stormy Petrels will head across town to take on No. 6 Emory University on Saturday at 6 p.m. After that, they'll head to Maryville, Tennessee, for a Thanksgiving weekend classic against Maryville College and Johnson University-Tennessee.

Men's soccer places nine on All-SAA teams, Waegelin earns top defensive honor

The Southern Athletic Association men's soccer coaches voted nine members of the Oglethorpe men's soccer team onto the All-SAA teams, released Nov. 11 by the league office. In addition, senior defender Christian Waegelin earned SAA Defensive Player of the Year honors, marking the fifth straight season in which a member of the team has earned a conference postseason award. He joined senior forward Ryan Marcano, as well as senior midfielders Andrew Grodhaus and Josh Bronstorph, on the All-SAA first team. Senior midfielder Gabe Alvarez, senior defender Sebastian Carlson and sophomore forward Abraham Lopez garnered spots on the second team, while freshmen goalkeeper Ulises Rodriguez and forward James Williams earned honorable mention. Waegelin capped an outstanding four-year career with the league's top defensive award. This marked his third career All-SAA honor and his second consecutive first-team nod. He served as an essential part of a defensive unit that currently sits third in the SAA over the course of the season with a 1.11 team goals-against average. That unit is also third in the conference with just 19 goals allowed and a .333 shutout percentage over the course of the campaign. The Petrel senior tallied a pair of goals and three assists on the season, as well. Marcano garnered the second All-SAA first team selection of his career this season. The Petrel offensive standout finished tied for first in the SAA in penalty-kick conversion rate, burying a perfect 3 for 3. He also finished third in goals per game (0.57), fourth in points per game (1.47) and total goals (10), and sixth in total points (22). Grodhaus has been a stalwart at holding midfield all four season with the Petrels. He's earned All-SAA honors all four seasons he's played for Oglethorpe and nabbed first-team accolades in back-to-back campaigns. This season, he scored three goals and tallied three assists out of his defensive midfield spot, scoring the game-winning goal against Centre in the team's 3-1 win on Sept. 28. Bronstorph bagged his first career All-SAA honor in this, his senior season. He's currently tops in the conference in assists per game with 0.56. He also holds the top spot in total assists with 10. Those marks put him 21st and 25th in the nation, respectively. Alvarez earned All-SAA second team honors in all four of his seasons as a Petrel. He's second in the conference in assists per game (0.53) and total assists (8), fourth in points per game (1.47), fifth in shots per game (3.53) and sixth in total points (22). Carlson took his second career All-SAA honor and his first second-team nod. He tied with Marcano for tops in the league in penalty conversion rate, knocking one home on Sept. 8 in the team's 5-1 victory over Gordon. In addition, Carlson served as an essential part of the Petrel back line while scoring four goals and tallying an assist over the course of the season. He also recorded a pair of game-winning goals, one coming against Rhodes on Oct. 18 and the other against Berry in the SAA semifinals on Friday. Lopez had an outstanding season in his second with the Petrels, taking home his first career All-SAA honor in the process. He's currently second in the conference in shot accuracy, putting 57.1 percent of his shots on frame. In addition, he's third in three categories: points per game (1.47), total goals (11) and total points (25). He's fourth in goals per game with 0.65. Rodriguez earned his first career All-SAA nod in this, his freshman season. He's second in the SAA in goals-against average (0.91). He's also third in save percentage (.756) and shutouts (4). Williams also garnered All-SAA honorable mention for his work during his freshman campaign. He sits seventh in the SAA in goals per game (0.50) and total goals (9).

Ulises Rodriguez named Oglethorpe University Male Athlete of the Week

Freshman Ulises Rodriguez of the Oglethorpe University men's soccer team has been named the OU Male Athlete of the Week (Oct. 20-26), after his performance in the Stormy Petrels' 4-0 win over Berry College, a victory that secured the team's fifth straight outright Southern Athletic Association (SAA) regular season title. A Business Administration major, Rodriguez is a graduate of St. Peter's Preparatory School in Jersey City, NJ. Rodriguez recorded five saves over the course of the game on Oct. 26, including four in the first half with the score either 0-0 or 1-0. He played for 81 minutes of what became the Petrels' fifth clean sheet of the season and picked up his eighth win of the year. He currently sits in second place in the SAA with a 0.66 goals-against average and a .829 save percentage. Rodriguez is also third in the conference with three clean sheets. This past weekend, Rodriguez and the rest of the top-seeded Petrels shut out the eighth-seeded Hendrix College in the first round of the SAA playoffs. Oglethorpe will host the final two rounds of the SAA Men's Soccer Championship on Nov. 8 and Nov. 10.

Lindsey Bolas named Oglethorpe University Female Athlete of the Week

Junior goalkeeper Lindsey Bolas has been named the Oglethorpe University Female Athlete of the Week. A Biology major, Bolas is a graduate of Troy High School in Tory, Michigan Bolas enjoyed an outstanding game for the Stormy Petrels on Saturday, Oct. 26---recording a whopping 14 saves over almost 105 minutes of play in the team's one-goal defeat. For the season, she currently sits third in the SAA in both total saves and saves per game (64 and 4.6, respectively), while playing the third-most minutes of any SAA goalkeeper (1130 minutes, 56 seconds). She also sits sixth in the conference with a 1.59 goals-against average.

Oglethorpe junior Oyinlola Oyinloye awarded full scholarship to attend Forbes Under 30 Scholar Summit

Oglethorpe University's Oyinlola (Lola) Oyinloye '21, a politics and economics major, was selected to receive a full scholarship to attend the recent 2019 Forbes Under 30 Scholar Summit held in Detroit, October 27-30, 2019. Oyinloye is a graduate of Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Ga. Touted as the "world's greatest event for entrepreneurs," the annual Summit welcomed 1000 diverse college students and future leaders, looking to grow their network and gain new life experiences in their fields. The immersive experience provides opportunities for learning and accelerated networking in the fields of technology, entertainment, finance, fashion, food, philanthropy and more. Scholars heard from special guests like Serena Williams, Kevin Durant, and Olivia Munn, participated in a service day, and enjoyed a music and food festival. Through the scholarship program, Forbes aims to ensure that a diverse set of high-achieving students from universities across the country are able to engage in the conference program. Scholars are evaluated and selected based on various criteria, including a written statement on how they embody the "Under 30" principles of leadership and innovation. While at Oglethorpe, Oyinloye has been proactive in pursuing experiential learning opportunities, including a recent summer internship on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. On campus, she has served on honor council and as a residence assistant, and is a member of Epsilon Iota Psi Sorority, International Justice Mission, Black Student Caucus, African Student Association, LEAD Campus Ministry, and Bethel Campus Fellowship. "The resources on campus, from the Career Development Center to the faculty, have been major contributors to my success," said Oyinloye. "It is very easy to find your niche and be a leader on campus because we have diverse clubs (and) organizations. Just the overall atmosphere of the community is inspiring, and it encourages me to do more. With every opportunity I am presented with, I aim to represent Oglethorpe University and its values well."
