Students majoring in Business Administration, Human Resource Management, Accounting, Economics, and Communication Studies recently shared their summer internship experiences with faculty, staff and other students.

The Oglethorpe volleyball team returns for the 2018 season, the second under head coach Joseph Goodson, and will look to make a big move up the SAA standings in 2018.

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team is back on the field starting this week, as they look to continue moving up the SAA standings under third-year head coach Wes Anania.

At the start of the academic year, the entire freshman class volunteers at locations across Atlanta for the annual Orientation Day of Service. This year, more than 300 students, plus transfer students, members of Alpha Phi Omega and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Achieve Atlanta Scholars, each volunteered at one of 17 local nonprofit organizations. The contributed work is valued at over $25,000 for the day. "We used our time and talents to impact communities in ways that cannot be quantified," said Jessica Winestock, associate director of A_LAB, Civic Engagement at Oglethorpe. "We befriended young children as we handed out food, we laughed with seniors over a game of bingo, and we learned lessons in mechanics as we helped to build wheelchairs." Experiences such as the Orientation Day of Service are not just "feel good" events. Service Learning curricula melds the classroom experience with the rigors of service, instilling sought-after qualities such as teamwork, leadership, empathy, and enthusiasm, as well as concrete foundations for creative and intellectual advancement. Nonprofits visited included: Trees Atlanta, International Rescue Committee, The Drake House, The Wylde Center/Oakhurst Garden, The Wylde Center/Hawk Hollow Garden, Frazer Center, Making A Way Housing, Inc., Hosea Feed the Hungry, AG Rhodes Health and Rehabilitation Center, Friends of Disabled Adults and Children, Books for Africa, Atlanta Community Food Bank, MedShare International, The Latin American Association, Charles R. Drew Charter School, UHOPE CDC, and the Latin American Association.

Sophomore Jacob Hadden has been named the SAA Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week in a vote by the league's coaches. It marks the third time in his career that Hadden has earned the honor.

The Oglethorpe baseball program's 2018 recruiting class was ranked as the #1 class in NCAA Division III by Perfect Game, the industry leader in promoting baseball and amateur players. Perfect Game assigns points to each recruit according to their national ranking, and the Stormy Petrels came out on top with the most points for the new class.

Freshman Oz Faal of the Oglethorpe men's track and field team has been named the SAA Men's Track Athlete of the Week (March 28, 2018) by the league's coaches for his efforts in the Emory Invitational.

Engineering major Mateo Villa '20 is the recipient of a McKee "Men of Action" Scholarship, a $2,500 award for his commitment to outstanding service to the community, presented annually by Delta Sigma Phi.

Oglethorpe University sophomore Nyree Dowdy had a plan this summer: to get experience that mattered. In May, the museum studies major participated in the selective Mellon Summer Academy at the High Museum in Atlanta. Then, back in her native state of Virginia, Dowdy searched for an opportunity related to her future career field-and found the perfect summer job as a Colonial Williamsburg camp counselor.

Mathematics major Zoe Nelson '20 was among only five undergraduates who participated in Clemson University's five-week summer program "preliminary Research Experience for Undergraduates" focused on code-based cryptography.

Museum studies major Taylor Roberts '21 has been awarded the prestigious Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship -- the first Oglethorpe University student to achieve this honor.

The Oglethorpe women's golf team saw three members earn recognition as Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars for the 2017-18 academic year, as junior Hailey Willman joined freshmen Angel Sanchez and Emma Meadows in receiving the honor. The Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) named Oglethorpe freshman Angel Sanchez to their All-Great Lakes region team for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Incoming first year student Caleb Smith '22 can now add the title of "world champion" to his resume. Smith earned a spot in the 2018 Optimist International Oratorical World Championship in St. Louis, Mo. over June 28-29, and emerged the winner after two days of competition.

The esteemed James Edward Oglethorpe Award is presented annually during Commencement to two individuals in the graduating class who, in the opinion of the faculty, have excelled in scholarship, leadership and character.

Graduating senior Stephen Johnson was awarded the Sally Hull Weltner Award for Scholarship at the university's commencement ceremony on May 13, 2018. The award honors the student in the graduating class who has attained the highest grade-point average with the greatest number of hours in course work completed at the university. This award is given annually in loving memory of Sally Hull Weltner, wife of Dr. Philip Weltner, president of Oglethorpe University from 1944-1953.
