Topher Marshall earns scholar All-America and All-Region honors for second straight season

Oglethorpe senior midfielder Topher Marshall received an outstanding cap to his career from the United Soccer Coaches Monday, earning spots on the organization's Scholar All-America and Scholar South All-Region first teams. It marked the second consecutive season in which he earned both honors. The Scholar All-America teams were voted on by a panel of coaches from around the nation while the Scholar All-Region teams were voted on by coaches from around the South region. It also marked the second national postseason honor of the season for Marshall, who took second team all-American honors from the organization in late November. The Stormy Petrel midfielder also garnered South Atlantic All-Region first team accolades around the same time, marking the third time in his career he's made a coaches' All-Region team. He garnered his fourth straight All-SAA first team honor in 2018 and continued his run as the best midfielder in the conference. He finished the season at 0.44 assists per game, putting him atop the league leaderboard in that stat. He also tied for first in the league with seven total assists. Both of those marks placed him sixth in the South Atlantic region. He finished fifth in the SAA in points per game (1.19) and shots per game (2.94), as well as finishing tied for fifth with three game-winning goals. He earned a spot on the SAA all-tournament team for his efforts in that event, which included a golden goal to beat Berry in the semifinal round. He also earned SAA Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 1. Marshall finishes his Oglethorpe career as the most decorated player in program history. He's now the only Petrel men's soccer to player to earn all-America recognition in two separate seasons, having earned All-America, All-Region first team and Scholar All-America first team honors in each of the final two seasons of his career. He won the SAA Offensive Player of the Year award twice and the SAA Newcomer of the Year award his freshman season. The Oglethorpe senior also took part in the most successful four-year stretch in program history. Since 2015, the Petrels have won four straight SAA regular season titles, an SAA tournament championship, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2017. Oglethorpe accrued a 47-13-9 overall record and a 24-1-3 mark in SAA play during Marshall's years on the team. The team currently enjoys a 21-game unbeaten streak in conference regular-season play. The United Soccer Coaches honored 37 student-athletes as Division III men's scholar all-Americans Monday, dispersed over three teams. They also honored 33 players on the scholar South All-Region teams. This year's all-America and scholar all-America teams will be formally acknowledged for their accomplishments in January at the United Soccer Coaches Convention in Chicago.

Senior Tyler Stridiron turns summer internship into post-grad job

When Oglethorpe University economics major Tyler Stridiron '19 had lunch with a university trustee earlier this year, he never anticipated the impact on his future career. Stridiron had his sights set on working for a large corporation, but knew getting a foot in the door would not be easy. To make his goal a reality, he reached out to Oglethorpe's Atlanta Laboratory for Learning (A_LAB) for guidance, and participated in a number of Academic Success workshops to learn effective networking skills. The A_LAB then helped him set up a meeting with Oglethorpe Trustee Jim Winestock, retired Senior Vice President of U.S. Operations at the United Parcel Service. Stridiron didn't waste the opportunity. "Unbeknownst to me, I left an impression which led to him calling UPS on my behalf for an internship," said Stridiron. "From that point, I had to fill out an application and had a short interview with the supervisor of the Talent Acquisition team," Over the summer, Stridiron worked in UPS's Human Resources Talent Acquisition department and collaborated on a few major projects, including the creation of a career fair calendar for the team and short videos documenting the internship experience. Stridiron attributes his success at the internship to his classes and leadership roles on campus. "The most important thing Oglethorpe taught me was how to communicate with peers and superiors," he said. "Through various leadership positions and jobs, I have been able to connect with a wide variety of people, which helped me remain confident and poised when networking or holding presentations." "My time at Oglethorpe has also taught me how to manage projects. Many times [at UPS], I was given a task with no details on how it should be completed, but various projects at Oglethorpe have honed my creativity." Stridiron gained even more valuable skills on the job. "I think the most important skill I learned during my internship was to be intentional," he explained. "Most of the opportunitiesat UPS were because I asked about it or I stepped up to take it. In corporate America, nothing is handed to you but if you show the drive to lead, then that makes an impression on your colleagues as well as your superiors." It worked. At the end of his internship, UPS offered him a full-time job in Human Resources, which he will start upon graduation. Stridiron doesn't take his early offer for granted, and continues to maintain communication and connection with the company. "Having a job lined up takes away the stress of looking for a job my senior year," he said. "(But) periodically I check in with the team to show I am still interested in the work of the team and I am eager to rejoin them." And for other students starting their internship searches? Stridiron recommends being "intentional." "Apply for as many as you can and do research to set yourself apart. The best way to be recognized is to meet a representative of the company. Without a human interaction you are a name on a computer."

Senior Jacob Arnett of the Oglethorpe men's golf team earned his second individual medal of the fall season Tuesday at the Oglethorpe-Royal Lakes Fall Invitational in Flowery Branch. He posted a 3-under-par 69 at the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, finishing the tournament at 8-under 136 to win by three strokes over Tyler Newton of York (Pennsylvania). He played even better on the course's front nine, posting an eagle on the par-5 third and recording par on the other eight holes. First Round Recap The Oglethorpe men's golf team enjoyed an outstanding front nine Monday at the Oglethorpe-Royal Lakes Fall Invitational in nearby Flowery Branch, posting a score of even par through 10 holes in the event's first round. However, the difficult back nine proved problematic for the Stormy Petrels, and they finished the day tied for 12th at 18-over-par 306, 15 strokes back of leaders Babson. Senior Jacob Arnett finished the day tied for first individually, as he posted an impressive 5-under 67 on the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club course. He carded seven birdies for the round including five over the opening six holes. He sat two strokes up on Tyler Newton of York (Pennsylvania) for the lead at the end of the day. Sophomore Anthony DeRosa finished the first round tied for 25th at 2-over 74. seven strokes back of the lead, serving as one of seven Oglethorpe competitors in the top 25. Arnett and DeRosa were the only two from the Petrels' main 5-man lineup, though. Senior Kyle Shealy posted a 9-over 81, freshman Justin Rickerson came in at 12-over 84, and freshman Sean Fromme posted a 13-over 85. Oglethorpe's Jazzy Petrels expand, perform off-campus

The Jazzy Petrels, Oglethorpe's jazz ensemble, recently performed at St. James Methodist Church in Brookhaven, offering a line-up of jazz standards from Coltrane, Ellington and Gershwin, plus several Lennon/McCartney songs. Directed by Dr. Brent Runnels, the group has seen a significant increase in instrumentalists this semester, and with that, instrumental variety. The ensemble's growth is due in part to the migration of some instrumentalists from Oglethorpe Winds. With the Winds on a hiatus during fall semester, the music department wanted to ensure those students still had the chance to participate in an ensemble. During the hiatus, the Winds program will be revamped, based in part on feedback from an upcoming student survey. "We'd like to relaunch the Winds program in a way that encourages and maximizes student participation," said Dr. Runnels, Oglethorpe's director of music. "Eventually we'd like to have multiple ensembles-both classical and jazz-that will give students the opportunity to explore different musical genres." The Jazzy Petrels include: Alexander Oakley, alto saxophone Rachel Bacchus, trumpet Miles Davidson, drum set Kinsey Degroat, vocals Sean Handy, bongos Ryan Holtzen, guitar Elizabeth Kontyko, violin Tadjudin Nathasya, alto saxophone Alan Payne, tuba Tre Rice, piano Tyrell Snagg, alto saxophone Justin Speer, soprano saxophone Max Wagner, electric bass
